The album Atoms contains my oldest songs. Although reworked, many stemmed from my teenage years and early twenties.
Atoms
The song Atoms is about the strange quirks passed from one generation to the next. The lyrics have been re-written a couple of times, most notably since becoming a parent. Raising children has been dynamic and from it I have discovered there is something that triggers me as much as anything else - abrupt, loud noises.

When a cupboard door is slammed in close proximity the rush of blood is intense. I feel furious. My father felt it too, and his father – a Scottish national who lived through military service in the 1940s.

Sometimes the way we feel can seem erratic but more often than not there’s a reason for it. This song helps me remember this.

A Thousand Small Fragments
Growing up in the country meant I spent less time with other families during my school years and the oldest friends I have were made at college. During that time feeling supported by my peers became more common and I remember frequently travelling awkward journeys by busses and trains to be where they were.

I wrote this song for them.
Only Human
During my early twenties I had a string of confusing relationships. One stands out in particular. Not only were they unreliable but they fabricated events and denied others. They had me questioning my reality and I later discovered there was a phase for this. Being gaslighted.
This song was written during and shortly after this was happening.
Serpents of Night
I have spent as much of my life living in cities but I still sleep best in the country. Finding somewhere away from road noise can feel like coming home and there are few things I enjoy more than a campfire in the sticks on a clear night.
This song has been with me since a teenager. It takes me back to evening walks in Friston forest and along the Cuckmere river.
